The theme of displacement is at the heart of two new books of essays, one on the writer Joseph Roth and the other spanning Paris, Russia and Renaissance Venice to examine the role of urban outsiders. David Herman finds there’s much to enjoy in these short volumes, as published in the October 2017 edition of Jewish Renaissance magazine. The first is Wandering Jew: The search for Joseph Roth, written by the former TV producer Dennis Marks; the other is The Foreigner: Two essays on exile, by the distinguished writer and sociologist Richard Sennett. Both were originally published in hardback in 2011 and now appear in paperback.
